Debating Sedition in Democracy

Debating Sedition in Democracy

A public meeting on the conviction and sentencing of Dr. Binayak Sen and others

Dear Friends,

Human Rights Forum invites you all for a public meeting to discuss the issues around conviction and sentencing of Dr. Binayak Sen and others by Raipur sessions court last month. The court verdict is a warning to the human rights defenders as well as civil society raising concerns over the lawless and unjust governance across the country. What is surprising is the judiciary is all willing more than ever to carry forward the undemocratic agenda of governing class and elite.

This is high time that all the democratic minded sections of civil society should come together and unequivocally protest and oppose the blatant invocation of colonial laws by the state to suppress the democratic voices of society. Dr. Sen, along with the others is charged under Section 124 C, the same section under which Gandhiji was once charged and sentenced to 6 years of jail by the colonial rulers.

As part of a nation-wide coordinated campaign event on January 30th, Martyr's Day,

Human Rights Forum and Free Binayak Sen Campaign group are holding a public meeting in Hyderabad.

The speakers would focus on the Sedition Act, its history and the way it is trampling on the rights of the citizens, the broader context of conflicts around natural resources in which human rights violations are taking place.
