Rivers

This report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) deals with the results of the performance audit of water pollution in India for the year ended March 2011. The issue was examined by CAG because various stakeholders working in the field of environment flagged water pollution as the most important environmental issue today. The audit was conducted through document analysis, collection of responses to questionnaires, physical collection and testing of samples. The results of audit, both at the Central and State level, were taken into account to arrive at audit conclusions.

Investigation & assessment report on arsenic in drinking water in Ballia district, Uttar Pradesh

Following media reports about arsenic contamination in Ballia, and a complaint from the people of Ballia to the Ministry of Rural Development, a National Level Monitor was requested to enquire into the issue of water quality. The enquiry will verify if the 103 affected habitations that have been reported as covered are actually functional and providing arsenic free water; it will also verify with actual visits whether the drinking water supplied in these 103 habitations has been tested for arsenic content, check whether 100% of public drinking water sources have been tested for arsenic contamination and inspect the status of Ballia's existing district water testing laboratory, among other important points.
