Invite to a Public Hearing on

'Corruption-free housing and Justice for Urban Poor'

July 5th, 2012 | Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh

Ghar Bachao Ghar Banao Andolan - NAPM has continuously been raising issues related to housing policies, schemes and options which would make this sector pro-poor, pro-people, sustainable and devoid of corruption.

During the last few years, we have investigated a number of fraudulent practices that are rampant in the slum 'rehabilitation' and various kinds of injustices meted out to the urban poor in declared and undeclared slums. People in thousands are seeking justice through dialogue as well as struggle, where and when necessary.

We have also been proposing various options in terms of policy amendments through schemes and projects. One of these is Rajiv Awaas Yojna, the housing scheme of the Central Government for socially and economically weaker sections. A number of dialogues and debates took place on the proposals put forth by us before the state level and central authorities so that the Scheme is planned and executed in a just manner, favouring the poor and marginalized communities.

But the final decision came only after the 9 days fast at Golibar in May 2011. Thereafter, a conclave held in Mumbai with the Chief Minister and Central Minister, concerned officials and elected representatives; and the decision to execute the scheme in Mumbai and Maharashtra created a hope. However, the end-result seems to be still far away.

In this context , thousands of poor yet determined families want that their case be heard, the problems they are faced with and facts they are living with explored into and the concerned authorities take cognizance of their every day struggle, and also the solutions they propose.

It is to be, they claim, a Public-Public-Partnership in the sector of urban housing which is also linked to the issue of land rights. It is in this context that GBGB along with Human Rights Law Network (HRLN) have planned this 'Public Hearing' on 'Corruption-free housing and Justice for Urban Poor' on 5th July, 2012 at Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh Hall , 2nd Floor, near Azad Maidan on 5th July, 2012 from 1:00 p.m to 5:00 p.m.

The Panel will be presided by :

Advocate Colin Gonsalves, Senior Advocate Supreme Court

Kathyayini Chamaraj, Social Policy Analyst, Bangalore

Amit Bhide, Urban Planner, TISS

Ashok Datar, Urban Transport Planner

Uma Adusumilli, Urban Planner

Dr. S Dhende, Municipal Councillor, Pune.

We invite you and your organisation to participate in this hearing. The hearing will be on based on presentations and submissions by communities and selected individuals and the report will be made available to the state agencies as well as concerned citizens and civil society organisations, for further action.

Yours sincerely,

Medha Patkar, Jamil Bhai, Madhuri Shivkar, Anwari Behen and Advocate Gayatri Singh, HRLN
