Asian Games gold medalist runner Pinky Pramanik was arrested after it was alleged she was a male and had tried to rape a woman, Indian Express reported. Pinky Pramanik won the team relay gold at the 2006 Asian Games. She also won the silver at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, and gold at the 2005 Asian Indoor Games. Pramanik used to run in the 400 metres and 800 metres and has had much success with the national 4×400 metres relay team.Pinky also achieved the special feat of triple of gold medals at the 2006 South Asian Games, winning the 400 and 800 m events, as well as the relay. Pinky retired from athletics after she suffered a road accident three years ago.
Pinki Pramanik (born 10 April 1986 in Purulia) is an Indian track athlete who specialises in the 400 metres and 800 metres. Pramanik had success with the national 4×400 metres relay team, winning silver at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, gold at the 2006 Asian Games, and gold at the 2005 Asian Indoor Games. She won three gold medals at the 2006 South Asian Games, winning the 400 and 800 m events, as well as the relay. Her first success was winning two bronze medals at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships when she was 17 years old. She was chosen to represent Asia at the IAAF World Cup. Domestically, she has won three times at the All-India Open National Championships. A series of injuries and a car crash meant that she rarely competed after 2007.In 2012 a rape allegation by Pramanik's female partner led to medical tests to determine her gender. Initial private tests claimed to show her to be male. Pramanik disagreed with these results and police ordered a separate government-led test as part of the trial.[1][2][3] The results at the SSKM Government Hospital were inconclusive.[4] The Court then directed a chromosome pattern test.[5]
Even as Asiad gold medallist runner Pinki Pramanik fights a legal battle after accused of being a male and arrested for alleged rape, an MMS allegedly showing the athlete completely naked and undergoing tests at a private nursing home has gone viral online.
The 29-second clip was reportedly circulated after Pinki underwent a gender verification test at a private nursing home in North 24 Parganas district where the sprinter was taken subsequent to her arrest June 14.
Alleging sexual harassment of Asiad gold medalist runner Pinki Pramanik, accused of being a male and currently under judicial custody for "rape", a civil rights group Tuesday sought West Bengal rights panel's help in the case.
Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR) has requested the West Bengal Human Rights Commission's intervention in the matter.
"Until proved otherwise, Pinki is a female and the way the police are treating her is deplorable. We have approached the WBHRC giving evidence about how Pinki has been continuously sexually harassed ever since she was arrested," APDR secretariat member Ranajit Sur told IANS.
Sur led a seven-member delegation and met WBHRC chairman Ashok Kumar Ganguly and submitted newspaper clippings, photos and pictures to substantiate their claim.
Holding the administration responsible for an MMS clip showing the athlete in the nude while undergoing a gender test which has gone viral online, the organisation sought exemplary against the guilty.

"I have heard about the video clip, though I am yet to see it. Those responsible for making the clip must be immediately arrested for such a heinous act. The matter needs to be reported to the police but at the moment Pinki is behind bars and no one from her family is available to file a report," Pinki's counsel Tuhin Roy told IANS.
Roy said he will raise the matter before the court notice at the next hearing July 12.
Meanwhile the police have maintained that they can act only if there is an official complaint.
"I spoke to police about the matter but was told that they could only act after a first information report (FIR) is filed.
"I have never been subjected to such humiliation and harassment in my life," said Pinki after she had to come yet again to the government run SSKM Hospital Monday to give blood samples for a chromosomal test.
The treatment meted out to the athlete has attracted severe criticism from several renowned sportspersons.
"Pinki is women until proven otherwise, but male police officers have been escorting her and at times dragging her out from the van. This is absolutely deplorable," former national women's swimming champion Bula Chowdhury said.
Another Asiad gold medalist Jyotirmoyee Sikdar echoing Chowdhury views said: "It is a shame that even after so many days, the test results are inconclusive. Why is she still being kept behind bars?"
The athlete has twice undergone gender determination tests in two different government hospitals but on both the occasions the tests were inconclusive.
"In the name of gender test, Pinki is being taken from one hospital to another, which has been causing her mental trauma and physical harassment," Pramanik's counsel Tuhin Roy said.
An 11-member medical board consisting of doctors from the government-run SSKM Hospital was constituted and conducted several tests on Pinki June 25. However, due to the lack of facilities, Karyotyping- a chromosomal test- could not be carried out.
The athlete's June 19 test at another government hospital in North 24 Parganas also was inconclusive, following which the athlete was referred to the SSKM.
Pramanik was arrested June 14 and remanded in 14 days' judicial custody by a court June 15 after the athlete's live-in partner, a divorcee and a mother of one, filed a police complaint accusing the athlete of being a male who repeatedly "raped and tortured" her.
Subsequent to the arrest, Pramanik was taken to a private nursing home for a medical check-up where the test reports claimed that the former top notch athlete was indeed a male.
Pramanik, however, claimed innocence and said it was a conspiracy.
Pramanik, who retired from athletics three years ago, won gold in the 4x400 metres relay at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar. The runner was a silver medallist at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games the same year.
The Eastern Railway, with which the athlete is a ticket collector, suspended Pramanik June 16 following her remand in judicial custody.
"Until proved otherwise, Pinki is a female and the way the police are treating her is deplorable. We have approached the WBHRC giving evidence about how Pinki has been continuously sexually harassed ever since she was arrested," APDR secretariat member Ranajit Sur said.
Sur led a seven-member delegation and met WBHRC chairman Ashok Kumar Ganguly and submitted newspaper clippings, photos and pictures to substantiate their claim.
Holding the administration responsible for a video clip showing the athlete in the nude while undergoing a gender test which has gone viral online, the organisation sought exemplary against the guilty.
"For nearly three weeks, Pramanik has been in judicial custody. Therefore, the entire responsibility of allowing this MMS clip to have been created rests with the administration. The commission must therefore enquire the entire matter and punish the guilty," added Sur.
The treatment meted out to the athlete has attracted criticism from the sporting fraternity as well.
After the uproar over arrested athlete Pinki Pramanik's video which was allegedly taken during her gender test, human rights activists now want her to be shifted to a women's cell, until her results are out. Pramanik's lawyers say that her live-in partner, who had claimed the sprinter raped and tortured her, may have recorded the video clip.
Human rights activists have filed a complaint and demanded that Pinki should be shifted to a women's cell, saying that she should be treated as a woman, until proven otherwise. Pinki has undergone a gender test and the results are expected by the July 12.
The activists say the West Bengal government is acting insensitively. "Pinki is kept in a male cell in the jail. There are male police escorting her, no female cops around. She should be treated as a women till proven otherwise.
Government should be ashamed. The government should restore her dignity," say activists.
Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR) has requested the West Bengal Human Rights Commission's intervention in the matter.
"Male police officers have been escorting her and at times dragging her out from the van. This is absolutely deplorable," former national women's swimming champion Bula Chowdhury said.
"She may be charged for a particular crime, but why is she being subjected to this harassment?" asked Shanti Mullick, the only woman Arjuna Award winner in football.
On Tuesday, the Association for Protection of Democratic Rights (APDR) and Nari Nirjatan Portirodh Mancha (NNPM) approached state human rights commission chairperson Justice Ashok Kumar Ganguly to complain about the "inhuman treatment meted out to the athlete".
"We approached the rights panel so Pinki gets justice and is treated with dignity. We protest against the degrading treatment of the athlete. We are confident the commission chair will ensure Pinki's case is handled with sensitivity," said APDR vicepresident Tapas Chakrabarty.
The team complained it was inappropriate for policemen to escort the athlete. She was a woman, unless gender tests proved her otherwise. "Pinki has to be treated as a woman. Is it fair of policemen to drag Pinki by her hand or put their arms around her while escorting her? We want the MMS to be stopped," Saswati Ghosh of NNPM said.
Ace swimmer Bula Chowdhury condemned the way Pinki was being treated. She and other athletes are rallying behind the jailed sprinter. "I know how much hard work and dedication it takes to bring laurels for the country. Pinki has done the country proud. She doesn't deserve the humiliation and harassment. Let the law take its course. But be humane with her. Treat her with respect. We are with her," said Chowdhury.
Dronacharya Awardee coach Kuntal Roy, too, is infuriated. "Pinki is an international athlete. She has won honours for the country. She should be treated with dignity," he said.
Pinki's family is in distress. Brother Joy Chand went to meet Pinki in jail on Tuesday but was turned away. "When Pinki won gold for the country, there were many around us. Now, barring the media, no one comes to us. No one has extended help till now. It is heart-breaking to see her in prison vans. The complainant has also named me in her FIR," said father Durga Charan.
Some of Pinki's neighbours in Baguiati, where she and her partner lived for about three years, say she has been falsely accused. "The complainant wanted more money from her. Pinki wants to speak to the media to tell her side of the story. She was hopeful of getting bail after June 29 but was mentally shattered when her bail plea was rejected," said Habibur Rehman, who met Pinki in jail on Monday.

Career
Pramanik made her mark at junior level when she set four junior state records in 2002.[6] She made her world debut at the 2003 World Youth Championships in Athletics where she reached the 800 m semifinals.[7] She won the 400 m race at the All-India Open National Championships soon after.[8] She set a record at the National Junior Athletics meeting by running 54.92 seconds in the 400 m, although some confusion over whether she was born in 1986 or 1987 dampened proceedings.[9][edit]International medals
She stepped up to the senior level the following year and won two bronzes in the 400 m and 800 m races at the 2004 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships.[7] In late 2004, an incident in which a group of youths planted a gun on her and called police put her career at risk. However, eye witnesses testified that the youths had harassed her and had placed the gun in her bag; she was released without charge. She took three months off from competition to recover from the stress of the incident.[10]Another medal came indoors when she took gold as part of the 4×400 metres relay team at the 2005 Asian Indoor Games with Iyleen Samantha, Santhi Soundarajan, and Mandeep Kaur. She returned to compete at the All-India Open National Championships, and came away with 400 and 800 m golds.[8] The 2006 Commonwealth Games was her first appearance at the world senior level and she performed well, reaching the 800 m semi-finals and recording a personal best of 2:03.83,[11] and winning a silver medal for India withRajwinder Kaur, Chitra Soman, and Manjeet Kaur in the 4×400 m relay.[12]

[edit]Injuries
A severe foot injury caused Pramanik to miss much of the 2007 season. She had returned to fitness by August and began competing at regional meeting and recorded 11.07 seconds in the 100 metres in Kolkata. She set her sights on winning at the 2008 Indian Inter-State championships in order to qualify for the 2008 Summer Olympics. However, she was struck by injury again and missed the championships due to a hamstring problem.[17]In early 2010 Pramanik inaugurated a local competition, the Purulia Athletic Championship. On the way home, she collided with another vehicle and suffered deep cuts to her face and knees. Although her condition was not serious, she suffered from much back pain and remained in hospital for further treatment.[18]
[edit]Controversies
On 14 June 2012, Pramanik was arrested after accusations by her female partner of rape and of being male.[19] On 15 June 2012, she was remanded to 14 days judicial custody.[20][edit]Personal bests
