Mahendra Singh Dhoni has lead India to the Twenty20 World Cup in the inagural tournament and followed that up with the 50 overs World Cup.
Dhoni has made it to the 16th place on the Forbes' list of highest-paid athletes with earnings of $31.5 million.
The list was topped by golfer Tiger Woods with $78.1 million over the last year from prize money, endorsements, appearance fees and golf course design work. Woods' resurgence boosted his prize money over the last 12 months to $13.1 million. the total amount has doubled since last year. The American now has 78 career PGA Tour wins, only four short of the all-time record held by Sam Snead.
Tennis star Roger Federer was second on the list with earnings of $71.5 million.
Kobe Bryant was third with an income of $61.9 million over the past 12 months. Bryant had the highest salary in the NBA for the third straight year during the 2012-13 season.
Dhoni moved up 15 positions this year after being placed in 31st position in 2012.
The business magazine estimated that Dhoni made $31.5 million over the last year from prize money and endorsements.
The only other India in the top 100 is Sachin Tendulkar who was ranked 51st with an estimated earnings of $22 million.
The Forbes list also features three women French Open defending champion Maria Sharapova placed 22nd with earnings of $29 million, Serena Williams with $20.5 million at 68th place and China's Li Na ranked 85th overall with earnings of $18.2 million.
The Indian captain may be on this list and far away in The UK for the Champions Trophy leading the Indian cause but back home the recent conflict of interest and IPL spot-fixing scandal that Dhoni refuses to talk about has cast a shadow on his reputation.
In a startling revelation on Monday, a leading Indian business daily reported that Dhoni has 15% stake in a sports marketing firm that manages him and three other Indian cricketers.
Making this list in the top 20 is courtesy Dhoni's reputation as a cool and collected captain that has helped India to win a number of laurels adding to the 31-year-old's endorsement demand.
The Indian cricket board would look into the alleged conflict of interest issue concerning Indian captain MS Dhoni's stakes in a sports management firm after the ongoing Champions Trophy tournament, an official said on Thursday.
Board of Control for Cricket in India ( BCCI) interim chief Jagmohan Dalmiya promised there would be no cover up.
"As far as Dhoni is concerned, you have seen it in the papers, so have I. At this juncture, when we are in the midst of Champions Trophy, nothing we are going to earn by disturbing him. But at the same time, we are not going to cover it up. Please wait and see," Dalmiya told a media meet.
Dhoni courted controversy recently following reports that he held 15 percent stake in Rhiti Sports Management, which manages cricketers Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja and Pragyan Ojha, besides the Indian skipper.
The company claimed that Dhoni held the shares for a brief while, and those were transferred back to the company in April after the payments to the India captain were cleared.
"As on date, MSD has no shares in Rhiti Sports Management. However, some shares were allotted to MSD on March 22, only to secure certain old outstandings that were due for more than a year," Arun Pandey, chairman and managing director of Rhiti Sports, has said in a statement.
Rajasthan Royals issued a statement on Friday saying that if proven guilty of betting, co-owner Raj Kundra will be suspended, as per reports.
The statement said that Kundra will be suspended and his shares will be forfeited if he is proven guilty. The statement was given after the Delhi Police claimed that the Kundra had confessed to betting.
Notably, Raj Kundra is a minority shareholder in Rajasthan Royals with a 11.7% stake.
Earlier in the day, Raj Kundra appointed eminent lawyer Majeed Memon as his counsel in connection with the IPL spot-fixing case.
Kundra wrote on his Twitter account, "I have now appointed Mr Majeed Memon as my council my official statements coming soon through Memon sir. Truth will prevail! (sic)"
Meanwhile, in support of her husband, Shilpa Shetty on Thursday wrote on the micro-blogging site: "Really upset with the media fr casting aspersions without any proof, making derogatory statements..Uncalled for and not to be tolerated(sic)."
She also tweeted: "Just to reiterate, will do it all it takes to reach to the bottom of this "spot-fixing case" and be of complete help till that happens!(sic)."
The reactions came after media reports claimed that the Delhi Police have seized Rajasthan Royals co-owner Raj Kundra`s passport and asked him not to leave the country till the spot-fixing probe is over.
It was also reported that Kundra might be arrested as Delhi Police have not ruled out the possibility of his arrest.
Police sources said they may quizz Kundra again and call Shilpa for questioning if there is a need.

Actress Shilpa Shetty placed bets of Rs1 lakh for an IPL match, Delhi Police claimed on Friday even as investigators said they do not believe her husband and co-owner of Rajasthan Royals Raj Kundra's statement that he lost Rs one crore in betting.
Kundra and Shilpa have denied allegations against them.
Police sources said they may quizz Kundra again and call Shilpa for questioning if there is a need.
The names of Kundra, who was questioned for 11 hours two days ago by police claiming that he had confessed to betting, and Shilpa, came in a statement recorded by his business partner Umesh Goenka, a bookie, during investigations into IPL spot-fixing scandal.
Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said Kundra remains "very much" part of the investigation. However, he added, Kundra was "not the focus" of their probe as there is no evidence as of now to suggest that he was into spot-fixing.
Police sources said Kundra had claimed during questioning that he lost Rs 50 lakh in betting during IPL IV season, Rs 40 lakh in IPL V and Rs 12.5 lakh in the just concluded IPL VI.
"We do not buy this argument. He had told us that he placed bets on matches played by Rajasthan Royals. In this season, his team won 11 out of the 16 matches it played and it is hard to believe that he lost money in betting," a senior police official said.
Asked about Shilpa, he said Goenka claimed that the actress placed a bet of Rs1 lakh. "We are verifying all these claims," he said.
Kumar denied allegations that Kundra was given special treatment by police.
Asked about Delhi Police not invoking Gambling Act like its Mumbai counterparts which charged Vindoo Dara Singh and Gurunath Meiyappan, he said they do not have supporting evidence to arrest Kundra.
"We don't have supporting material evidence. I do not know the details of Mumbai Police's investigations. So I cannot comment on them. But we will go after somebody only if we have material evidence to back our investigations," the Police Commissioner said.
Kumar said Kundra is not the focus of their investigation and that he happened to figure in disclosure statements of some people. "That's why we thought it prudent to speak to him," he said.
"We are yet to decide on Shilpa. We always keep our options open. Ours is not a short term investigation which are going to close in the next two or three days. It's going to take time. Let us see how things unfold," he said.
Players S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan were arrested on charges of spot-fixing during the recent IPL tournament after which they were suspended by Rajasthan Royals.
Delhi Police had earlier created a stir by claiming that Sreesanth and the two other players had acted at the "command" of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and Chota Shakeel, among India's most wanted, as it invoked the stringent MCOCA against 23 accused in the case.

The NCP supremo declined to comment on the raging spot-fixing and betting controversy which has rocked Indian Premier League with even team owners coming under a cloud.

NCP President Sharad Pawar on Friday fuelled further speculation on getting back into cricket administration when he said that he may be "in some sports body in the future".
Amidst speculations that he may contest the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) elections to make a comeback into BCCI, he told reporters that, "right now, I am not associated with BCCI (so I should not comment). I may be with some sports body in the future."
At the height of the recent spot-fixing scandal in IPL before BCCI President N Srinivasan was forced to step aside till pendency of the inquiry, there was speculation that Pawar may contest the MCA elections.
As per rules, one needs to represent a BCCI affiliated unit to take up an office-bearer's position in the country's governing body for cricket. The BCCI AGM is scheduled for September where there is a possibility of an election.
Pawar also said that he endorsed Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's view that politics and sports should not be mixed, saying he never did it during his long association with sports bodies.
"I have been associated with sports for many years but never brought politics into sport. Prime Minister is right when he says that politics should not be mixed with sports," he said.
Pawar declined to comment on the raging spot-fixing and betting controversy which has rocked Indian Premier League with even team owners coming under a cloud.
Jagmohan Dalmiya hopes to salvage image of cricket
BCCI's Interim chief, Jagmohan Dalmiya has stated that all steps would be taken to salvage the image of cricket, which took a beating in wake of the spot fixing scandal that hit the recently concluded money spinning IPL. Dalmia would look after the daily affairs of the BCCI after its beleaguered president N. Srinivasan stood down on Sunday in wake of the spot-fixing scandal that has hit the game and led to the arrest of his son-in-law last month. On Saturday, IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla resigned, barely 24 hours after BCCI secretary Sanjay Jagdale and treasurer Ajay Shirke had quit their posts. Addressing mediapersons in Kolkata, Dalmiya clarified queries about Shirke's and Jagdale's stand on resignation from the board.
Banning after match parties during the Indian Premier League could be one of the solutions to cleanse cricket, according to BCCI's Working Group chief Jagmohan Dalmiya who today promised to leave no stone unturned to restore the credibility of the game.
Addressing his first press conference since taking over charge from N Srinivasan who stepped aside, Dalmiya said that he will make all efforts to achieve the ultimate goal so that "the good name of cricket is retained".
Asked whether he would consider banning after match parties in the IPL as part of his cleaning up process, he said, "One of the possibility could be that.
"I don't have any medicine that you get instant result. We don't have any such kind of a magic. We will try our best," he said.
The 73-year-old Dalmiya made it clear that he had powers to fill up vacancies in the Board and will await a final response from Ajay Shirke before taking decisions.
"They (Jagdale and Shirke) were given 24 hours time. Initially, we requested that we have full faith in you and therefore please carry on and don't insist on resignation. They were given 24 hours time. That was yesterday's position.
"As far as Jagdale is concerned, he has no intention to withdraw resignation. That's the stand so far. I tried to talk to Shirke, also Mr Shetty and others tried to talk to him but not able to communicate with him. I will wait.
"I'm hopeful that a decision will come out. No decision has been taken as yet. I will wait for another 24 hours," Dalmiya said.
Dalmiya said that in case both the secretary and treasurer refuse to reconsider their resignations, the vacancies will be filled up.
"As far as the present context, if they are not there, the vacancy will be filled up. It is already in the rules. If there is a vacancy it would be filled up. There are rules for this from President to down below. We will go by the rule book," he said.
Asked about the constitutional validity of yesterday's Emergent Working Committee Meeting which has been questioned by some members, he said, "That's a personal opinion. I don't agree with this."
On whether there was a timeline for the probe against Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan and CSK franchise, Dalmiya said, "It is a million dollar question. How can there be a timeline. It will depend on how you proceed and how you work.
"Just 24 hours have past since I took over. Let us wait and not rush through."
On how confident he was in his new role, he said, "I don't know the capability and capacity of Jagmohan Dalmiya ... I will not leave any stone unturned so that the good name of cricket is retained."
"All the efforts will be made to achieve the ultimate goal. It is a difficult time through which we are passing. With the help of all the friends, we will be able to find out some kind of solution.
On whether he had the powers to take decisions, Dalmiya said, "Wait and see whether I've got any power or not. Allow me to settle me in my chair. Hold on, I've not passed 24 hours."
Dalmiya said he had been given a responsibility under difficult circumstances and he could not shy away from it.
"No. This is no comeback. Temporarily I am given a responsibility and I thought this is a time one cannot shy away. That is why i've accepted the challenge."
On whether he would represent the BCCI in the ICC during this period, he said, "No decision yet. I may and may not present at the ICC."
Brand IPL stands eroded, not just morally but literally. In April this year, Brand Finance — a London-based brand valuation consultancy had pegged the sixth season of IPL's brand value at $3.03 billion, sharply down from $4.13 billion in 2010. A significant reason for the value erosion was attributed to "lack of governance".

One of my overseas colleagues once commented that honest Indians carry a chip on their shoulder — because honesty has unfortunately been a rare commodity in our country.
