Calcutta, June 8: An Irish NGO worker who was allegedly raped in the city last month is in hospital after a suspected overdose of prescription drugs. "She is in intensive care on oxygen support. She will be kept under observation for at least 24 hours more," said an official of the hospital where she has been admitted. Hospital sources said she had taken 10-15 tablets of different compositions, including paracetamol, sleeping pills and anti-depressants. While police said they were not sure if the Irish woman had consumed the medicines in a bid to commit suicide, hospital authorities said they were treating it as a case of attempted suicide. "If someone consumes so many types of drugs together consciously, we treat such cases as an attempt to suicide," the official said. Sources said Calcutta police's detective department, which is probing her complaint of rape, came to know around 10am today that she had consumed the medicines. The police have learnt that the woman had sent a text message to one of her friends early today, following which the friend rushed to the three-star Free School Street hotel where the foreigner was staying. The police refused to divulge the contents of the text message. The Irish lady was found in a semi-conscious state in the hotel. She was admitted to the hospital at 6.30am. http://www.telegraphindia.com/1130609/jsp/bengal/story_16988134.jsp#.UbSdBueBlA0 |
