World's deadliest dinners: Food items which can destroy your body in minutes
Watch before you chew. Certain exotic food items are capable of destroying your body in a matter of minutes. Sample our list of deadly choices that will most likely leave you gasping, but not for more:
CASU MARZU Also known as the "rotting cheese", Casu Marzu is stuffed with live maggots that speed up the fermentation process. Upon consumption, the maggots can live in the body, causing diarrhoea and vomiting. It is illegal to produce the cheese in some parts of Italy.
HOT DOGS In 2010, the American Paediatric Society recommended a redesign of the hot dog. The cylindrical shape of the popular snack has made it a prime culprit in the deaths of children from choking.
CASSAVA ROOT The root is a rich source of carbohydrates. But if undercooked or not cooked properly, the root releases cyanide that can prove fatal.
RHUBARB The rhubarb leaves are full of oxalates that can prove to be poisonous if consumed in significant quantities, causing seizures and respiratory problems.
SANNAKJI This is a Korean delicacy where the tentacles of a live octopus are cut, dabbed with sesame oil, and served. This dish is dangerous because of the suction cups of the tentacles, which can cause asphyxiation if they are not chewed up completely.
MONKEY BRAINS The consumption of monkey brains will not heighten your senses, it will cause an illness known as the Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. This leads to the brain turning into mush, literally.
FUGU Chefs are required to train for three years before they can legally prepare and serve the Fugu or blowfish. Less than a gram of the Fugu's poison, tetrodotoxin, causes the muscles to freeze and keep one from breathing.
ACKEE It is Jamaica's national fruit. Only its yellow arillus is eaten, the black seeds and red outer skin are toxic. The fruit also contains a poisoncalled hypoglycin, which requires special handling and preparation.
DEADLY WEBCAP The name is self-explanatory. Although the deadly webcap resembles a regular mushroom, it has the capacity to contain more than seven different kinds of toxins.
YEW BERRIES Yew berry seeds contain an alkaloid that can result in an accelerated heart rate, muscle tremors, convulsions and heart failure. The only way to avoid death is to eat just the red aril surrounding the seed.
SILVER-STRIPE BLAASOP If the liver and reproductive organs of the fish are not removed before consumption, the toxins in this fish can lead to paralysis, breathing problems and eventually, death.
GIANT BULLFROG This animal has been described as a "minefield of toxins", with the skin and organs being particularly dangerous to eat. The risk of temporary kidney failure or even death is high.
URUSHI TEA Drinking Urushi tea triggers immediate dehydration; it causes fluids to quickly exit the body through numerous orifices. The Japanese have made it illegal to drink the Urushi tree extract, and use it as an ingredient for lacquer products instead.
